Grammar and vocabulary assignments

Grammar and vocabulary assignments will be available on the web page of the Contest Course on March 25, 2026 from 17:30 till 19:00 Moscow time. You can start working on the tasks any time within this time frame.

Communicative Game

Imagine that your team is part of an international space crew stranded on an alien space station. No one speaks Russian and you don't speak any of their languages. You are all using English as the lingua franca. Your team has to carry out some repair work, with the other team handing you the necessary tools. The only way for you to get the tool is to describe it as accurately as possible.

During the second day of the English language contest, you will be competing against a randomly assigned team from another university. You will get a time slot when you are to connect to a video conferencing platform using the link that we will send to you. You and your opponents will see a set of pictures showing various tools on the screen. The team that gets to play first will receive a message with the number of the object they will have to describe. As soon as the other team guesses the object correctly, a new number will be sent. After 5 minutes, a new set of pictures is shown and the teams swap roles.

Each team has a time limit of 5 minutes. The goal is to describe as many objects as possible to the other team. Each correct guess earns a point for the both teams, so be sure to listen closely! Extra points will be awarded for eloquence, impeccable English and verbal etiquette (1 point for each category). Points will be deducted for using Russian (-1 point) and over-reliance on gesticulation and body language (-1 point).
